The Highway Hospice, having started in 1982 is KZN’s oldest and most established Hospice. Founded in the home of their founder Greta Schoeman, the Highway Hospice has grown in size and impact over the nearly 40 years of existence. They have cared for so many patients, families and friends through the journey of incurable terminal illness. Their multi-dimensional and wholistic approach to hospice and palliative care, sees that the “entire human being” is cared for. Medically, physically, emotionally, spiritually, intellectually and socially.
They have a number of “community hospices” which facilitate their reach into the less accessible areas of the eThekwini community they serve. At present, these are in Chesterville, Inanda, Phoenix and Umlazi; where they have teams of care givers at work. It is some 2,300 square kilometers of area to cover, from the Durban side of Amanzimtoti to Ballito, and inland to Hillcrest. Their work is based on the hospice mindset that their care is a human right, and is so available to all without expectation of cost.
